Notes on a Maple Leaf
This series was inspired by scientific illustrations from the 17th and 18th centuries and the sense of wonder and artistry that they lent to the science and exploration of that time. Looking at hand-drawn images that might be the only record of a new species or an unknown land made me think about the ways we record things that are new to us: concerts, a butterfly we’ve never seen before, a few notes jotted down about a stranger. Today, we use the camera for this kind of data collection and exploration, but in creating the written notes and drawings, as well as the pictures, in the notebook I photographed, I feel as if I understand more about the subjects. And that, to me, is the point of doing this - a ritualized record to clarify a chaotic world.
